Sacred Harp Singing
Led by David Elsenbroich and
Andrea Tzvetkov
Sacred Harp is a uniquely American singing tradition where people sing songs in three and four-part harmony from a tune book called, The Sacred Harp. The music is written in notation using four shaped-notes, and is a proudly inclusive living tradition. Participants will learn about what shape-note singing is, how to read the music, and by the end will be singing four-part harmony in the Sacred Harp tradition. No singing or sight-reading experience is required, all are welcome!

THEATER
West Virginia Fiddle Tunes of Staggs and Welch Families
with Ben Townsend
We will be exploring the musical history of the Staggs and Welch families from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia (WV). Sloan Staggs, our local butcher, was a renowned banjo and mandolin player whose tunes are relatively unknown outside the region. He was also a well-known singing coach who led shape-note sings at churches across Hampshire and Mineral counties. I learned Sloan’s tunes through Paul Roomsburg, who studied from him intensively.
We will also look at the playing of Israel Welch, a fantastic fiddler from Mineral County, WV, who is, again, relatively unknown outside the region. Israel’s unique style combines the WV tradition of his home with influences from his time in Newfoundland as a soldier. His repertoire includes a host of tried and true WV staples, some more regional numbers, and some specific to his family, like “Cookoo’s Nest” and “The Sunset Waltz.”
This workshop is hands-on and will be primarily fiddle-focused. I’ll bring along a banjo to show some backing ideas, and am happy to have folks join on other instruments who don’t mind translating the melodies from the fiddle. Time permitting, I’ll do my best to teach a tune from each fiddler and show a short documentary about the Staggs family and the music of Hampshire County.

Flatfooting
with Afton Steps
You might have heard of Clogging, and perhaps you already clog. Flatfooting is an older style of foot percussion, in which your feet are the instrument and you play the tune along with the musicians.
If you have two feet and you can stand on them, I promise to get you Flatfooting! And even if you have two feet but can’t stand, I can get you chair dancing! And that includes all of you who think you have two left feet! (… you never get told you have two right feet, do you?)
Best to wear closed shoes, not flipflops, and low or no heels.
